Wordless Wednesday - 7/11/12 - Tillandsia usneoides

Onc. Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy'

Oncidium Twinkle is a primary hybrid between Onc. cheirophorum and Onc. sotoanum.  This hybrid was registered in 1958 and since then has achieved global popularity with many different forms being grown by enthusiasts.  I have mine potted in 2 parts medium bark to 1 part styrofoam cubes.  They are grown under 75% shade cloth and I let them dry out between watering.

The two forms which I own are 'Pink Profussion' and 'Fragrance Fantasy'.  My 'Fragrance Fantasy' flowered for the first time this past year and what it lacks in individual flower size it makes up for in numbers.  It had 6 spikes on it all of which were jam-packed with flowers.  The plants are very impressive for their size and their scent is an aiding factor in their popularity.  A hybrid I most strongly suggest and make brilliant specimen plants.  I have mine potted in 2 parts medium bark to 1 part styrofoam cubes.  They are grown under 75% shade cloth and I let them dry out between watering.

Oncidium Pacific Paladium is a Hybrid between Onc. Sharry Baby and Onc. Illustre (for further details on Oncidium Pacific Paladium's family tree, see image below).  I have this plant growing under 75% Shade cloth in a pot with 2 parts Medium Bark to 1 part Styrofoam Cubes.  I let this plant almost completely dry out between waterings and it flowers in Winter.  This plant is highly fragrant and smells of chocolate.  Definitely a plant I would suggest.


I recently divided this plant as it was growing new growths in the centre of the plant and it would have just complicated matters.  Normally I would have left it to grow into a specimen plant as I believe it would put on quite a show, but at least now I will have a back-up plant, and it will only mean it'll take just a bit longer to make it a specimen.

Bulbophyllum rothschildianum

Bulbophyllum rothschildianum occurs in the Southern Yunanan Province of China, Northeastern India and Assam.  I have this growing under 75% shade cloth growing in a shallow pan in medium bark topped with a layer of sphagnum moss.  I let it just dry out between waterings and this particular species flowers between Spring and Autumn.  It is available to temperatures between 0°C - 40°C.

This plant puts on an incredible display when grown into a large specimen plant.

While I was doing my daily blog visits I went onto Karen's blog and some music miraculously started playing.  well it turned out that Karen had added music to her blog and I thought it was so nice that I would do the same with mine.  I hope you like it.  If it's too loud then just turn the music down, this can either be done on your computers volume control, or on the control pad on the music player at the bottom of the blog.  You can also choose from the three songs I have there, and please, if you know of some nice songs please suggest them, I would like to get a wider range of music available :).

My Little Patch of Heaven

Hey Everyone,

For those of you, who by some chance haven't heard this song before, I figured I just had to share it.  Seeing as how I listen to this song all the time, i.e. it's my alarm that i wake up to in the mornings, I thought that something similar to the title of the song may make a nice name for my blog, hence the name My Patch of Heaven.  After all, my garden may not be someone elses patch of heaven, and it may not look like heaven, but it is mine and that's all that matter to me.




And of course, how could I not share one of those animal friends that I share the garden with, which of course is one of the things that makes it that slice of heaven

HAPPY 50TH BLOG POST!

Hey Everyone,

Well, this milestone came about quickly, or at least I feel like it did, and it just so happened to coincide with the 1500 pageviews milestone too.  I know some of you may find this boring, but I thought it would be interesting to have a look-see at some of the statistics of page views, traffic sources and of course where in the world all my lovely readers are :)

As you can see, this is the Page views by country, and i swear to you, none of the 209 in Australia is me, i keep checking and apparently there are a lot of people in Oz looking at my posts... plus i checked that little ticky thing that means that my page views don't count :)

Once again pretty self explanatory, but I'm pretty excited by the number of followers... THANKS GUYS!... exciting thing is, i only know one of them in person :)

Sadly I don't think I'll be able to go on my blog very much over the next 3 weeks or so because I'm going into my final exams for Year 11 and I really need to hunker down and work on them, so I promise I'll post and reply to comments when I can, but I can't promise anything :)

P.S. I couldn't possibly post on Halloween without doing something related to it.  We don't celebrate Halloween that much here in Oz, but I wish we did, it seems like good fun

And of course I had to share a photo of one of my best friends, Jack, and I dressed up for the Halloween Street Party that was on the weekend.  I went as an Aussie Stockmen, and Jack went as some Mexican Spirit of Death or something..... I wonder if Jack reads my blog... I guess i'll find out by seeing wether or not he comments about the photo :)... I'm the one on the right
